A Bucks man has driven an aid van to Ukraine after his town came together to raise funds.

Kieran De Guyatt from Amersham was in Ukraine delivering aid to a hospital and an army base on March 8 when he spoke to Bucks Free Press

The 33-year-old part-time law student had driven a van loaded with supplies to Kiev for the first time following multiple aid trips to Poland over the past year.

Seeing the devastation of war has been “very humbling” for him.

He said: “People are on edge quite a lot.

“We’re in the middle of Kiev. We delivered aid to the hospitals.

“And as we drove in, we saw burnt out Russian tanks, so you could see how close they got into the city, it was unbelievable how close the city came to falling, and how well they’ve done to push back."

He was driving with Glenn Frazer, also from Amersham. Kieran said he asked Glenn to join as he's a former RAF soldier.

Kieran sent a short message on March 9 as they were leaving Ukraine, saying a missile had hit Kiev but they were safe.

Despite the traumatising conditions, people Kieran met seemed “upbeat”.

When the war first started last year, Kieran rushed to donate clothes and other supplies before setting up Ukraine Aid United group.

He then got asked if he could be a driver to send the aid to Poland so it can be taken over the border.

“It wasn’t really until I got to Poland at the border when I really saw the devastation that was going on and how hurt the people were,” he said.

Before his first trip to Ukraine, he was doubtful whether he would be able to do it himself since the first two trips to Poland had been funded by one individual.

“But I really wanted to see if I could do it, and come to Ukraine and hand over the aid I had collected myself as well,” he said.

On the anniversary of the war on February 24, Kieran organised a final fundraising push at the Amersham Royal British Legion Club before the big trip.

The sold-out hit event featured Trevor Dodson as Elvis, music, dancing and a raffle with £1200 raised.

“I can’t thank the people in Amersham, surrounding areas and from far and wide as well, who have donated," Kieran added.

Thanks to his part-time studies at the Open University of Law, Kieran can dedicate time to fundraising and social media about the situation in Ukraine.
