APRIL FOOLS!

Toll charges will be put in place on a historic bridge in Marlow ahead of a visiting Netflix major production.

Buckinghamshire Council is set to introduce toll charges on Marlow bridge as part of an ongoing effort to both discourage HGVs from crossing and to draw in flashy film and TV crews from Netflix.

From this summer, the council will charge all vehicles crossing the bridge 50p, serving the dual purpose of preserving the historical infrastructure and helping it to become a filming hotspot for streaming giants such as Netflix and Disney+.

A resident of the area, Mr Brunel, told the Free Press that the new charges would be introduced from June this year, ahead of the arrival of film crews from the hit Netflix series Bridgerton.

Mr Brunel said: "Obviously the bridge has a lot of historic value, which should be protected, but more importantly it would be a great honour for Marlow to serve as a filming location for such a culture-defining television phenomenon as Shonda Rhimes's Bridgerton.

"I can only assume the council will pour the funds from the toll bridge into putting on the full works for stars like Simone Ashley and Phoebe Dyvenor, who will demand the best possible treatment."

It comes after Marlow bridge was featured in the opening shots of BBC 1's Great Expectations adaptation, which aired on Sunday, March 26.

Between April and June, Bucks Council is expected to erect a Bridgerton-themed toll house by the entrance to the bridge near the Compleat Angler hotel, which is also expected to participate in filming for the Netflix series, with Bridgerton actors making use of its interior and exterior spaces.

The toll collection house will also be modelled on the former Cookham Toll House, which still stands today but ceased operation in 1950 after the levying of charges for crossing became widely unpopular.

Councillor Chros Sing said that while imposing toll charges on everyone crossing Marlow bridge was a final resort, they were excited for what they are sure will be a star-studded, and, equally as important, safe future for the town.

A spokesperson for Netflix added: "Marlow bridge is an ideal location and we can't wait to give it a little facelift and commence filming for the next season of Bridgerton - as soon as financial negotiations are resolved, which we trust the council have well in hand."
