It's a tradition to eat fish on Good Friday and while cod and chips is not quite biblical fare, it's still a great excuse to visit your local chippy.

Religious or not, it has become many people's custom to switch out meat-centric meals for fish on Good Friday.

It's a tradition that has its origins in Christian teachings, with the disciples abstaining from eating meat on the day commemorating Jesus' crucifixion.

Historically, meat was consumed far less regularly and was usually reserved for celebrations, while fish was a common delicacy because of its accessibility.

While food culture has dramatically shifted since biblical days, fish is still a central part of our diets. Unlike Jesus' followers, though, we often prefer ours in crispy batter with a serving of chips and mushy peas.
