A museum and developer announced they had concluded a land transfer after months-long delay.

Chiltern Open Air Museum and Comer Homes revealed they had reached an agreement during the laborous negotiations to transfer the freehold of the land housing the outdoor attraction in Chalfont St Giles.

The transfer confirmation yesterday (April 6) comes months after the museum and Comer Homes were drawn into a bitter row about alleged breaches over their responsibilities.

The 45-acre land has been the home of the museum since the 1980s, featuring in many popular TV shows such as Call the Midwife, Downton Abbey and Midsomer Murders.

The land will be transferred to the museum for £1, as part of the S106 agreement with Buckinghamshire Council for the redevelopment of the neighbouring Newland Park manor and grounds, which Comer Homes is developing into luxury homes with a price tag of up to £1.5 million.

A spokesperson from Chiltern Open Air Museum said: “We are very pleased that we have now agreed terms for the freehold transfer with Comer Homes and expect this to be completed very soon.

“This means the museum will be able to continue its charitable mission of rescuing and reconstructing historic buildings here on our site while also providing educational and entertaining events throughout our season.

“In addition, visitors will continue to enjoy our lovely gardens, parkland and woodland that are so beneficial for wellbeing.’

Chiltern Open Air Museum boasts a collection of more than 30 historic buildings built by its volunteers and the site hosts regular re-enactments and events, which form a big part of the museum’s revenue.

A spokesperson from Comer Homes commented: “We are delighted to have completed the land transfer to the Chiltern Open Air Museum for the sum of £1.

“We understand this has been an important event for the local community and we appreciate the patience afforded by all sides during the transfer process.

“The museum is a crucial community asset and one that we value highly and wish to support as part of our delivery of Newland Park. Our residents will value having such a fantastic educational resource on their doorstep.”
