A high street pub is to get a full transformation, ending residents' concerns for its future.

The Red Lion, situated on Burnham High Street has announced it is to undergo a £290,000 refurbishment.

The prominent pub has been closed since January after the previous operator left.

Toni Mataj who is the new licensee of The Red Lion said: “Burnham is a lovely village with a lot of character; I feel incredibly lucky to have found a pub here.

"As soon as I saw The Red Lion was available, I jumped at the chance to take it on.

"It’s crying out for investment but full of potential.

"I want to give it the TLC it needs and make it a pub the village can be proud of again.

"The Red Lion is rundown now but will be beautiful when the work is finished. I can’t wait to open the doors.”

The project aims to turn The Red Lion into a 'great quality pub serving excellent food'.

Toni currently runs the New Bettola Italian restaurant in Colnbrook and will be partnering up with Heineken-owned Star Pubs & Bars for the investment.

With work beginning on April 17, The Red Lion is scheduled to reopen in late May, with a full renovation of the outside of the 'tired' pub.

The pub will boast an 'attractive café-style seating and flower displays' with a rear garden revamp, including new planting, furniture and festoon lighting.

A complete internal makeover will upgrade the 'dated pub' with 'contemporary' décor, including booth and leather-covered banquette seating, wood floors and feature wallpaper and lighting.

Toni hopes to introduce homemade food cooked from scratch with a refitted kitchen and a new menu catering for all occasions.

All of the refurbishments and changes are aimed at putting The Red Lion on the map for the quality of its drinks as well as its food.

Star Pubs & Bars’ area manager Andrew Downie said: “We’re delighted to be joining forces with Toni to bring The Red Lion back to life and give it a new direction."
