Rishi Sunak met President Zelensky in Bucks this morning (May 15) to discuss the provision of extra military aid for Ukraine.

Mr Sunak hosted the Ukrainian President at Chequers, the historic country residence of the UK Prime Minister, which sits between Princes Risborough and Wendover in South Bucks.

Their meeting, which marked President Zelensky's third visit to the UK since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, saw the two leaders engage in "substantive negotiations" on the ongoing conflict.

Downing Street announced following the talks that the UK will provide a new package of military assistance to Ukraine, including hundreds of air defence missiles and long-range attack drones with a range of over 200 kilometres (124 miles).

Speaking at Chequers this morning, Mr Sunak said the Ukrainian president was the first foreign leader he had hosted at the country residence.

Adding: "There's a lot of great history here. Winston Churchill made many of his famous speeches during World War Two in this very room, and in the same way today, Ukraine's bravery and fortitude are an inspiration to us all."

Mr Sunak described the talks as a "crucial moment" in Ukraine's resistance to "a terrible war of aggression they did not choose or provoke".

"They need the sustained support of the international community to defend against the barrage of unrelenting and indiscriminate attacks that have been their daily reality for over a year.

"We must not let them down. The frontlines of (Russian president Vladimir) Putin's war of aggression may be in Ukraine, but the fault lines stretch all over the world. It is in all our interest to ensure Ukraine succeeds and Putin's barbarism is not rewarded."

At the meeting, Mr Zelensky said the Ukrainian people were "thankful from all of our hearts" to the UK government, the king and the British people for their ongoing military aid.

He added that the "urgent support" for Ukraine was a matter of security not just for his homeland but for all of Europe.

The talks at Chequers mark the beginning of a week of diplomatic activity in Europe on the Ukraine crisis, including a Council of Europe summit in Iceland and a G7 gathering in Hiroshima, Japan.

The new military aid package will be delivered to Ukraine over the coming months, alongside the long-range Storm Shadow cruise missiles previously pledged by the UK after continued Russian attacks.
