Dozens of drivers were slapped with ‘unfair’ fines after parking at a Buckinghamshire Council car park.

An eagle-eyed passer by spotted a sea of yellow parking fines decorating the windscreens of dozens of cars at Duke Street Car Park in High Wycombe near the train station on May 15.

Parking at the site was reportedly suspended between May 13 and 15 so Buckinghamshire Council could repaint the lines, but many motorists drove in as usual and were caught out.

Drivers took to a High Wycombe social media group to vent their frustration, saying the signs were not clear and access to the car park should have been blocked off to avoid confusion.

Martin Kempton said: “Was very clear and lots of signs when I went in at 7am this morning. I even mentioned it to a few people that were parking their cars there.

"The problem is people are so intent on getting on the train/getting a ticket or on their phones they don’t read the notices properly. Good luck trying to get your money back.”

Jo Jones said she planned to appeal her fine since “both entrances were open, no sight of anyone working when I parked at 7.30.”

“Don’t remember seeing a sign and the Ringo app happily accepted my parking payment.

“Surely the signs weren’t that obvious if that many people still parked there.”

Councillor Julia Wassell said she had written to the council’s cabinet member about the “unfair matter” after money was taken and a parking ticket was issued.

Harry Seager said: “Block it off then. People are on autopilot going to work and probably paying for the car park on their phone app when seated on the train so not looking at signage with as much detail as someone who is new.”

Buckinghamshire Council apologised to the drivers, saying the fines should not have been issued and they will be reversed.
