A teenager politician from Buckinghamshire has vowed to fight ‘boy racers’ and anti-social behaviour in his hometown.

Labour party's new youth campaigner Hussain Shahid has shared his vision for the future of High Wycombe.

The Bourne End Academy pupil decided to join Labour because of “all the scandals coming out about Boris Johnson and Partygate.”

The Booker resident was elected to join Labour's youth wing in April.

“I’m also an aspiring councillor and as the elections are in 2025 I wanted to give myself time properly to gain popularity,” he added.

If Hussain became the Wycombe MP in the future he would “try to stop the cost of living crisis.”

“As MP I will work closely with the government to solve it – hopefully if that were to be a Labour government more closely,” he said.

He said Castlefield has one of the highest crime rates, and although councillors were working “hard to reduce those numbers” there was still work to do to tackle anti-social behaviour.

He agreed racing in the Booker and Castlefield roads was the number one problem, and he was keen to see speed limits, bumps and cameras at the speeding hotspots.

He continued: “Lowering the voting age is something I believe in and will campaign for. I also think High Wycombe deserves it’s own Town Council like places like Chesham, Amersham and Aylesbury for members to voice their opinions.

“Wycombe deserves its own, independent voice. Many constituents feel Buckinghamshire Council doesn’t understand Wycombe’s problems and concerns.

“Whether it’s in a year or two years it has to happen.”

Hussain balances his studies at Bourne End Academy with meetings and organising, including for a Buckinghamshire Youth Labour conference.

“It is hard sometimes but that’s part of the job. Of course, it’s also very enjoyable – otherwise I wouldn’t have done it.

“I’m very excited and I can’t wait to get cracking!”

He said young people being so closely involved with social media meant it was harder to engage with them but having a dedicated youth officer was helping.

“There are a lot of [young] people who want to join Labour but without a youth officer they didn’t have a youth representative and now I’m the youth officer it’s more accessible,” he said.

He is also looking forward to a Buckinghamshire Youth Council, which he hopes will be announced later this year.

In November last year, High Wycombe Labour announced Emma Reynolds, a former MP and Shadow Cabinet Minister, as its next Parliamentary candidate. The Wycombe seat has been held by Conservative MP Steve Baker since 2010.
