Did you know Bucks was home to the largest Christmas cracker and biggest hoard of roman gold coins in the country?

Buckinghamshire is a county known across the UK for a number of things - the rolling Chiltern Hills, beautiful market towns and a rich literary and cinematic history.

But more unconventionally, it also happens to be home to a number of bizarre and impressive Guinness World Records.

From the greatest bounty ever robbed from a train to the highest number of medical conditions sniffed out by dogs, here's our rundown of Buckinghamshire's top 7 most bizarre world record holdings.

1. Most magic tricks underwater in three minutes

The current world record holder for the most magic tricks performed underwater in three minutes is Martin Rees, who did 20 tricks while submerged underwater at Pinewood Studios in Iver in November 2020.

Martin beat the previously held record by seven tricks and performed his record-breaking attempt as part of Guinness World Records Day 2020.

2. Fastest half-marathon dressed as a star

The Guinness World Record for the fastest half marathon run by someone (male) dressed as a star belongs to Milton Keynes native Jason Charles.

He won the title while competing in the Milton Keynes Festival of Running 2021 and ran in support of the Harry's Rainbow charity which provides support to bereaved children.

3. Largest hoard of 1st century roman gold coins in the UK

Shane Pyper broke the world record for the largest hoard of 1st century roman gold coins in the UK in October 1999 when he discovered 124 coins dating from 46AD to 76AD in a South Buckinghamshire field.

He sold 123 of the coins to the Luton Museum for £200,000 - and later discovered three more at the same site!

4. Oldest continuously operating miniature world

The Bekonscot Model Village and Railway in Beaconsfield is the record holder for the oldest model of a miniature world. Opened to the public by Beaconsfield resident Roland Callingham in August 1929, it includes six villages, a racecourse and 10 miles of miniature railway.

It has been run by the Church Army charity since 1978 and has hosted over 14 million visitors over the years - including Queen Elizabeth II.

5. Greatest robbery from a train

The Guinness World Record for the greatest train robbery took place in August 1963, when a Post Office mail train from Glasgow was ambushed and robbed at Bridego Bridge in Mentmore near Aylesbury.

A gang escaped with 120 mailbags containing the equivalent of £2.5 million in banknotes. Only £343,448 was ever recovered.

6. Most medical conditions detected by dogs

Milton Keynes-based charity Medical Detection Dogs is the holder of the world record for most medical conditions detected by dogs.

Canines trained by team members can sniff out 28 different medical diseases and disorders including asthma, epilepsy, PTSD, multiple types of cancer and Covid-19.

7. Largest Christmas cracker

A fun one to wrap up the list - the Guinness World Record for the longest Christmas cracker belongs to Robin Carr on behalf of parents at Ley Hill School and Pre-school in Chesham.

The cracker, which measured 207 feet long and 13 feet wide, contained balloons, toys, a hat and a joke and was pulled by schoolchildren at Ley Hill in December 2001.
