NHS bosses feel disappointed that its funding application to fix Wycombe Hospital "in need of repair" was refused.

Wycombe Hospital is in urgent need of replacement, with repair costs approaching £2m a year and critical infrastructure requiring £80m in immediate attention.

Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust said they are disappointed that its funding application to address the critical building safety issues at Wycombe Hospital was not granted in the Government announcement of NHS building projects.

Bosses say they will continue to seek the urgent investment Wycombe Hospital needs and hope to be successful in future Government funding awards.

An investigation into the structural integrity of the 1961-built building started over a year ago, with scaffolding and green netting deployed on the main building.

However, the trust claims it would cost up to £200m to build a purpose-built planned care centre on the Wycombe site that meets the healthcare demands of the 21st century.

Without additional funding, the trust cannot afford to fix the tower or cover the costs of creating the new medical centre either.

The Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust (BHT) has attempted to secure widespread funding, including requests to the government, but has been unsuccessful in obtaining the capital it needs to secure a new, safe, and modern healthcare facility.

Neil Macdonald, chief executive of BHT, states that the facility is "approaching its end of life and is in dire need of replacement," with the trust encountering ongoing maintenance of small, narrow wards, poor ventilation, and increasing vulnerability to water damage.

The government has prioritized other hospitals outside the area that are experiencing critical problems while BHT struggles to secure the funding it needs to maintain patient welfare.

Macdonald said this was "really disappointing," but the trust was still hopeful of finding the investment required to secure a new healthcare center.

Macdonald added that the costs of Wycombe hospital needed diverting from episodic repairs but instead investing in a 21st Century healthcare facility, which could provide an improved patient experience.

The hospital's ceiling would not collapse, but the ongoing costs and structural integrity of the building have raised concerns.

Macdonald's hopes of renewed investment may come from further government funding, but the BHT may seek alternative ways to fund the Wycombe Hospital replacement.
