A free festival taking place in Marlow this weekend celebrates the town's rich history and creative talent.

A 'One World' festival is being held at Marlow Museum from Saturday, July 29 to Sunday, July 30 between 12pm and 4pm as part of Buckinghamshire Culture's Open Weekend.

Vice-chairman of the museum, Dave Part said the line-up for Saturday will pay tribute to Pamela Nottingham MBE, an internationally renowned lacemaker born in Marlow who sadly passed away in May.

Alongside hand loom weaving, art exhibits and renditions of Honiton Lace folk songs, Dave will read aloud an obituary for Pamela that was published in The Guardian and remembers her impressive life and "kind and generous" character.

Saturday's schedule also includes a Walk Through Literary Marlow led by Heather Adams and a talk about climate change from the founder of the Marlow Writers' Group, Jonathan Slack.

Hand weaving demonstrations are set to continue through to midday on Sunday, where they will be followed by readings from the newly published Marlow Poets Book, a collection of work by local creatives.

The weekend is set to be brought to a close with Status Quo's 'Rockin' All Over The World', performed by the Marlow Ukulele Group.

Dave said: "This is the first year the museum has been involved with the Open Weekend and it has coincided with the recent bereavement of one of our stalwarts, Pamela.

"She has a huge history and travelled into Marlow from East Barnet all the way into her eighties to come to the museum. She also left us a very generous bequest connected with her lacemaking."

He added that the event was a chance to celebrate Marlow's wide range of cultural offerings, having been a place of inspiration for literary greats T. S. Eliot and Mary Shelley and boasting modern dramatic, artistic and musical talents including novelist and screenwriter Robert Thorogood.

"It's all pretty much new ground for us, hosting this kind of thing. We're making an effort to set ourselves apart and we've had positive responses from the Buckinghamshire Culture team, which is encouraging. They were especially impressed by the ukuleles!"

Buckinghamshire Culture's Open Weekend annually takes place from July 27 to July 30 and has this year recruited nearly 80 organisations and groups to interpret the 'One World' theme in diverse and interesting ways.

The festival in Marlow is free to enter and will be held on the veranda of the Marlow Museum outside Court Garden Leisure Complex between 12pm and 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
