An Indian restaurant has been handed a new ‘low’ food hygiene score.

The Food Standards Agency inspected Chesham Tandoori at 48 Broad Street in Chesham on June 16, 2023.

The FSA inspects restaurants, cafes, pubs, bars, takeaways and canteens and establishments are given a sticker to display on their window.

The ratings range from zero (in need of urgent improvement) to five (very good).

Chesham Tandoori was given a zero-out-of five rating.

Hygienic handling of food, including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage was found to be in need of major improvement, the FSA website showed.

Cleanliness and the condition of facilities and the building, including having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control to enable good food hygiene was in need of improvement.

Management of food safety, meaning system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future was rated as ‘major improvement necessary.’

Manager of Chesham Tandoori Abdul Hasthnath said: "This has been extremely concerning for us.

"Zero star for us was a real kick in the teeth. This is really bad.

"We have immediately started to rectify the issues. We had certain transitional changes during the six months, but everything is there. We have been here over 40 years.

"We take it incredibly seriously and we are getting on top of it as soon as possible.

"We are looking to apply for a reinspection within the next couple of weeks and get back to our five-star rating."
