New photos have revealed a closer look at a temporary housing facility in Bucks that has been slammed as ‘disgusting’ by tenants.

The Buckingham Hotel on West Wycombe Road has come under fire after tenants, housed under Buckinghamshire Council’s temporary allocation scheme, exposed the “flea-infested” bedrooms and unhygienic living conditions.

Alongside three tenants who spoke out last week, another person, who wanted to remain anonymous but said they are looking after a small child, has supplied photos of the hotel showing a dirty plaster on the floor and dirt and “scum” on the walls.

The resident, who asked to remain anonymous but said they have a small child, said they were forced to register as homeless after failing to secure a private rental for income-related reasons.

They said: “The council put us in the Buckingham Hotel, which I made a complaint about on the very first night due to my concerns about the hygiene.

“I feel guilt-ridden not being able to provide my child with a roof. It has caused my anxiety to become worse, and I just find myself crying at night because I don’t want them to have to live like this.”

Other tenants previously described the hotel as “disgusting”, with one person adding: “Over the past two weeks, I’ve been bitten head to toe by fleas. The manager won’t look you directly in the face and will just laugh if you try to complain.”

Another said: “There’s a lot of vulnerable people here – I don’t feel safe in the building. It feels like the system has let us down.”

Councillor Mark Winn, Cabinet Member for Homelessness and Regulatory Services, said regular visits are carried out by the temporary accommodation team who work closely with providers to ensure that accommodation is appropriate.

He added: “We were made aware of the flea issue and are dealing with this.

“If any of our tenants are concerned about their accommodation, we would urge them to contact us by emailing their Housing Advisor in the first instance. The email address is housingneeds.av@buckinghamshire.gov.uk. We can then investigate their concerns and act upon them promptly.”

The Buckingham Hotel has been contacted for comment.
