A Conservative MP from Bucks has criticised the upcoming ban on XL Bully dogs.

The MP for Buckingham Greg Smith has criticised the ban on XL Bully dogs, which will come into effect in the new year after it was introduced by the government.

The Conservative MP labelled the ban as a punishment on the “whole breed,” calling for bad owners to be targeted instead.

Mr Smith said: “The attacks by XL Bully dogs, including my own constituency, that we have seen in recent months have been heart breaking.

“However, I have always believed it is the deed that should be punished and not the whole breed.

“I have had a number of concerned emails from constituents who own XL Bully dogs that are well trained and under control and it seems overly harsh to me to ban a whole breed and put unreasonable restrictions on existing animals that show no signs of bad or aggressive behaviour.

“We need a more balanced approach to tackle those who have abused animals, failing to train and control their dogs, whilst enabling responsible dog owners to continue enjoying the companionship of man's best friend.”

Sadly, Eddie suffered horrific puncture wounds and the beloved pet had to be put to sleep.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak revealed plans for the ban after a string of fatal and serious attacks on people believed to have involved XL Bullies.

From December 31 2023, breeding, selling advertising, rehoming, abandoning and allowing an XL Bully to become a stray will be illegal after the government added the breed to the list of dangerous dogs.
