A film directed by George Clooney will premiere at a cinema in Buckinghamshire this week to help raise funds for a local boathouse.

The Boys in the Boat, a film based on a New York Times bestselling book directed by George Clooney and starring Callum Turner will hold a premiere at the Everyman Cinema in Marlow this weekend ahead of its UK release next week.

The screening event, which will be held on Sunday, January 7, between 5pm and 9pm, has been organised by the Marlow and District Schools Boathouse Trust (MDSBT), as part of its fundraising campaign for the construction of a new boathouse for Marlow's two secondary schools.

Nick Harding, a rowing coach at Great Marlow School who also taught the cast of The Boys in the Boat how to row on set, will attend the premiere alongside Olympians Greg Searle OBE, Great Marlow School alumnus Steve Turner and Sir William Borlase's Grammar School alumnus Jack Beaumont, with a reception hosted by Sir Steve Redgrave.

Speaking to the Free Press back in September, Jim Biggs, 57, Volunteer Director of the MDSBT, said the procurement of land in Gossmore Lane, where the boathouse would be built, was a positive step towards providing life-changing opportunities for school children both in the area and further afield.

Jim said: “My son rowed at Borlase between 2010 and 2014 and I saw first-hand how much better his focus and his grades got as a result of training hard and being part of a team.

“We want this to be a really socially inclusive endeavour that expands the Marlow schools’ rowing experience out and beyond the limits of the district.”
