A crackdown on HGVs ‘rat-running’ through Bucks villages is planned as Buckinghamshire Council wants the public’s views.

A proposed ‘Waddesdon Area Freight Zone’ would cover the villages of Ashendon, Brill, Chearsley and Cuddington in north Buckinghamshire.

Launching a consultation on its plans, the council said the freight zone would “reduce traffic on local roads” by removing HGVs that are just passing through.

It said there would be an exception for vehicles travelling to destinations within the zone, such as drivers making deliveries.

The boundaries for the proposed ‘freight zone’ are north of the A418, south of the A41, east of the B4011 and west of Rabans Lane, Aylesbury.

The proposals come as residents “worry” that lorries damage roads and landscapes and, make some highways more dangerous safety and worsen air quality.

Residents’ feedback included “when a lorry goes by, they often rip the hedges and grass verges”, as well as concerns for precious historic buildings and others who say, “trucks are noisy and make everything shake”.

The council admitted that it “considered a total HGV ban” in the Waddesdon area but “rejected” the idea as it would “seriously disrupt” bus services and deliveries.

The deadline for members of the public to share their views is by midnight on Saturday 17th February 2024.
