A FRUSTATED resident is urging 'selfish' park users to stop littering in The Rye.

Rubbish, including bottles, have started to build up in the river prompting Bucks Council to take action.

Georgia Bellis-Jones said there are plenty of bins for people to chuck their rubbish into, instead of into the river.

She said: "The small subset that this applies to - kindly consider throwing their bottles and other rubbish in the many bins provided around the Rye, rather than chucking it in the river.

"This pile has built up over the course of a couple of weeks."

Bucks Council has not been contacted by the resident over the issue as Georgia thinks it would be counterproductive for the local authority to clear it up.

Instead, she wants locals to take responsibility for their actions.

Ms Jones added: "I just think it’s selfish and ignorant behaviour, when there are bins everywhere. Worst case, take your rubbish home with you.

"There are some herons that live on this stretch of river so it’s just a shame to see in their habitat.

"There’s always been rubbish left around as long as I can remember but this tree fell down and catches it all so it’s built up and makes the volume even more obvious."

Bucks Council said the fallout from Storm Henk has caused "large amounts of debris" in the river.

Clive Harriss, Buckinghamshire Council's Cabinet Member for Culture & Leisure, said: "The recent storms have resulted in large amounts of debris being added to the river, which has then been carried downstream and trapped by this fallen tree.

"However, as soon as it is safe to do, we will remove the fallen tree and clear the associated litter.

"We would like to remind visitors and residents to The Rye to please take home their litter or dispose of it in the available bins in the park.

"Any fly-tipping should be reported to us via FixMyStreet. This will help keep The Rye clean and safe for everyone."
