A resident has described living at a retirement village in Buckinghamshire as an 'absolute nightmare' with no hot water, persistent flooding and 'uncaring' management.

A resident at Hughenden Gardens Retirement Village in High Wycombe has described it as an "absolute nightmare" and said they "bitterly regret" selling their property to move into the complex.

The resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, told the Free Press they had lived at the retirement village for over two years and had become "fed up" with persistent flooding and plumbing issues, the latest of which means there has been no hot water on site for nearly three weeks. 

"How are people meant to shower and get clean? It's just awful - many of us sold our properties to move here and I can't go anywhere else because I sunk my life savings into this place.

"I was perfectly happy where I was before but I moved to be closer to family. Now, I've got washing up that I haven't been able to do, one person had their possessions damaged from flooding and it's not unusual to see buckets in the hallway. I've never lived like this, ever."

They accused ExtraCare, the charity that owns the facility, of "selling (them) a pack of lies", adding: "Nothing seems to be done in our favour and neither the management nor ExtraCare seem to care about us. 

"They'll say they're trying to fix the leaks or the hot water, but it just happens time and time again.

"I've spoken to other residents and they didn't know what they were getting themselves into either. I'd never have thought it would be like this, otherwise I never would have come here. You just don't want these problems at our age."

A spokesperson for ExtraCare said they were aware of the flooding and plumbing issues at Hughenden Gardens and were working to resolve them "in a timely manner".

They added: "Regarding intermittent hot water, we have had continuing communication with residents and have someone attending the location to rectify the issue on Wednesday, January 17.

"As a charity, the welfare of our residents is very important to us, and we apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused."
