A shopper claims a parking company has "made a fortune in fines" after she received an £85 ticket for a one-hour parking session.

The resident who lives in Great Missenden, but wants to remain anonymous, said the parking barriers at Dovecot Car Park for Sainsbury in High Wycombe were open on January 20.

The shopper arrived at the car park shortly after 10am and departed at 11.16am, with barriers remaining up upon entering and exiting the car park.

They told the Bucks Free Press: "I inadvertently assumed there was no charge that day.

"When I left just over an hour later, the barriers were still up and the shutter was down on the office window.

"Imagine my surprise when I received a parking fine because I hadn’t paid for parking."

Sainsbury's has explained the confusion with the parking barriers at Dovecot Car Park.

A spokesman at Sainsbury's explained: "We removed the barrier system at our High Wycombe store last year.

"We now offer Pay on Exit with Automatic Number Plate Recognition and there are signs which highlight this to our customers throughout the car park."

The move is designed to make it easier and more convenient for customers to shop. The retailer will now use cameras to determine how long customers have shopped at the store.

The shopper added: "There were plenty of cars in the car park that day, I can only assume they must have made a fortune in fines."
