A FAMILY has fallen victim to a keyless car theft in High Wycombe.

In the early hours of Monday, February 19, thieves unlocked the families Mercedes estate using an antenna in Cressex, making off with the vehicle.

The car owners are wanted to remain anonymous due to the police investigation, but have sent a plea to locals, saying: "Unfortunately our car was stolen last night in Cressex!

"These people are using the antennas to open the car and unlock them!"

The car has since been recovered by police but other personal possessions were dumped in Cambridgeshire that Monday morning.

Turning to possible solutions to stop keyless car thefts, the family has advised motorists to consider a Faraday box.

This device counters the keyless theft menace that is proving to be popular among thugs.

Louise Thomas, a motor expert at Confused.com, elaborates on the complex situation keyless car owners find themselves in.

She said: "Keyless car thefts are becoming more common, with criminals using a variety of sophisticated techniques to gain access to people's vehicles.

"And our research reveals that almost half (45%) of UK drivers think that it's too easy for thieves to steal modern cars.

"But despite that, only 1 in 5 (22%) use any type of theft prevention device to deter them."

Louise offers practical advice for keyless car owners.

"Use a faraday pouch to store your car fob – these will help to block the signal, and some cost as little as £5 to buy.

"Keep fobs away from doors and windows – the further away it is from the car, the less likely thieves will be able to pick up the signal.

"Use a steering wheel lock – this will stop thieves from being able to drive off, if they gain access to the car."

She also issued a warning on insurance for owners of keyless cars, saying "as keyless cars can be a target to criminals, some drivers might see that their insurance prices are more expensive than before.

"Especially, if they live in a high risk area.

"But taking measures to protect your car can help ensure that it doesn't become a target."

With keyless cars becoming increasingly popular, but increasingly targeted, owners are urged to take preventative measures.

Thames Valley Police said: "Between 2.30am and 3am on Monday (19/2) we received reports of a theft of a motor vehicle from Cressex Road, High Wycombe.

"The matter has been filed pending any further information coming to light.
