Work on a huge sinkhole that opened up in Wooburn will take place in 2024, the parish council has said.

The cavity in Sappers Field, which measures 35m in depth, was reported to Wooburn & Bourne End Parish Council in May 2023 and the area was sealed off.

The appearance of the sinkhole, which opened up beneath a playground, followed the appearance of another similar sinkhole in the same field at the end of February 2020.

Penny Drayton, a unitary and parish councillor for the area, appeared to begin to give an update on the work to fill in the second sinkhole at Tuesday night’s parish council meeting this week.

The Independent councillor began speaking about the Sappers Field before being cut off by the clerk Mike Balbini, who said this would be covered at a later meeting.

Wooburn & Bourne End Parish Council and Buckinghamshire Council have been approached for comment.

Buckinghamshire Council organised a survey of the second sinkhole last year and began tendering for companies to fill in the cavity, with work to start in 2024.

Surveying firm Geoterra performed a 3D subsurface laser scan and HD video survey of the hole, showing that it was 35m deep and was a formation known as a ‘bell pit’, according to Ground Engineering.
