A 'lovely country pub' in Princes Risborough has been handed the lowest food hygiene rating possible.

The Red Lion, a 17th-century pub on Upper Icknield Way in Whiteleaf, was given a food hygiene rating of zero out of five following an inspection on Friday, March 8.

The zero score is the lowest possible rating awarded by the Food Standards Agency, and indicates a need for urgent improvement.

An inspector found that major changes needed to be made to the pub's food safety management and to ensure the "cleanliness and condition of the facilities".

They also concluded that The Red Lion needed to improve its hygienic food handling, including the preparation, cooking, reheating, cooling and storage of food.

The new rating means the boozer, which has an average Google rating of 4.5 and is described in recent reviews as a "lovely little country pub", has become the only establishment of its kind in Buckinghamshire to have a zero rating.

It joins Madina Superstore in High Wycombe and the Veg Chennai Srilalitha restaurant in Amersham as the only businesses with the score in the county.
