Four crews worked for hours to put out a fire in Hazlemere after large clouds of smoke from burning refuse piles caught residents' attention yesterday afternoon.

Firefighters from Buckinghamshire and Berkshire were called to Amersham Road at 12:42pm yesterday (April 25).

Crews from Wycombe, Amersham, Marlow and Maidenhead worked to contain the blaze, which was caused by multiple piles of mixed refuse catching alight.

The firefighters worked all through the afternoon to contain the fire and “prevent it from spreading to on-site buildings and containers”.

They used four sets of breathing apparatus, three main jets, four pumping appliances and one water carrier to tackle the flames.

The four crews remained on Amersham Road until yesterday evening.

A representative for the Buckinghamshire Fire and Safety Service said a reinspection of the site was also carried out this morning (April 26).
