A man has been handed a three-year jail sentence for his violent conduct towards two women - including one incident where he allegedly smashed a woman over the head with her own iPhone.

Kenneth Romney, 53, of Myrtle Crescent, Slough, was sentenced at Reading Crown Court today (May 8).

Judge Amjad Nawaz said the defendant had an extensive criminal history, with convictions for 57 separate offences.

At trial last October, he was found guilty on two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, two counts of criminal damage and one count of intentional strangulation.

These were in relation to attacks on two different women, committed on April 16 and April 24, 2023.

The court heard that, during the April 24 assault, Romney smashed in the glass pane of the woman's front door, before punching, slapping and biting her in the head.

Judge Nawaz described this as the most serious incident of the two Romney was being sentenced for.

He told Romney: "She was subjected to this treatment by you in her own home."

The second attack took place over a more prolonged period.

The complainant alleged that, while staying with Romney for a number of days, he smashed her own iPhone over her head.

The judge noted there was no direct evidence of head injuries resulting from this, and that it is more likely Romney broke the woman's phone on the floor.

She was also punched repeatedly in the face and body.

Defence barrister Olive Lycourgou said that Romney has expressed a desire to put his criminality behind him.

She told the court: "He really needs to move on [with his life]."

However, Judge Nawaz did not accept that there was much prospect of rehabilitation, highlighting Romney's long history of offending.

He jailed the defendant for a total of three years.
