'Nightmare' traffic is expected on a road in Hazlemere as a two-day road closure for sinkhole repair works comes into force.

Buckinghamshire Highways will close Penn Road at 8pm tomorrow, Thursday, May 23, until 6am on Saturday, May 25.

It will allow highways teams to carry out repairs on a sinkhole that has caused flooding problems on the road in recent weeks, and for which traffic control measures have been in place for months.

The council has warned that delays are likely, with a diversion route via Amersham Road indicated on signage.

Penn Road was temporarily closed just last week after a collapsed water main flooded the sinkhole, causing a "nightmarish" traffic build-up, with vehicles "gridlocked" through the village, according to one resident.

They said the temporary road closure had lasted from the end of last week to Monday night, May 20, and expressed frustration at the prospect of further delays in the area, caused by what the council previously described as a "subsiding road surface".

Back in February, the council said the sinkhole had been caused by a "historical issue", and Deputy Member for Transport Peter Martin told the Free Press last week that the upcoming closure was necessary to "make the road safe for all users".
