A 21-year-old man has been ordered to pay £1,625 and handed a three-year football ban after hitting a police officer at a Wycombe Wanderers match.

Callum Barlow, of The Vineries in Eastbourne, Sussex, reportedly hit an officer in the face with his mobile phone, causing swelling and bruising, at a game between Wycombe Wanderers and Derby County at Adams Park on April 10.

Police confronted him after he was spotted interfering with other supporters’ cars and dragging furniture into the road, blocking match-goers from leaving via Hillbottom Road.

The 21-year-old was reportedly asked “numerous times” by officers to stop, before “making off” and attacking the officer when they caught up to him.

He was found guilty of assaulting an emergency worker and given a three-year football banning order at High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court on Monday, August 5.

He was also ordered to pay a fine, compensation, court costs and a victim surcharge totalling £1,625.

The banning order prevents him from attending any regulated football matches for three years, requires him to surrender his passport for England fixtures and imposes a number of geographical restrictions around Derby County’s home and away fixtures.

Dedicated football officer PC Jon Evans said: “I welcome the court imposing this banning order following the offence and hope that it acts as a strong deterrent for anyone who participates in such behaviour.

“With the new English Football League season kicking off this weekend, this sentence demonstrates that police will deal robustly with those who commit crime at football matches, and we will always seek to apply for football banning orders where appropriate.”
