An outdoor museum will step back in time to Victorian England this weekend as the era's less savoury characters are brought to life.

On Saturday, August 16, and Sunday, August 17, Chiltern Open Air Museum, in Chalfont St Peter, will host The Ragged Victorians, an award-winning living history group renowned for their realistic portrayal of the working-class poor who made up the majority of Victorian society.

Visitors can expect to interact with characters such as a rat catcher, mischievous street urchins, rogues, vagabonds, pickpockets, and a Victorian doctor as the group vividly recreate the gritty street life of 19th-century England.

Families are invited to pack a picnic, explore the museum’s 45-acre site, and enjoy refreshments from the on-site café.

A spokesperson for Chiltern Open Air Museum: "This engaging and educational event offers a unique way to experience history up close and is suitable for all ages."

Chiltern Open Air Museum was founded by volunteers from the Chiltern Society in 1976, and opened to the public in 1981.

The museum is a charity that rescues threatened historic buildings, which would otherwise be demolished, and rebuilds and preserves them in a traditional Chilterns landscape.

The independent charity receives no government funding, with all operating costs funded via admission charges, memberships, private hire, filming, school visits, catering, shop sales, and donations.
