A Poundland supermarket in Buckinghamshire has announced that it will close permanently this spring.
The branch’s Cambridge Street location in Aylesbury is set to cease trading on April 12 this year, just over three years after opening in December 2022.
It became the town’s second Poundland store, joining its original shop along the High Street, which arrived in 2010.
The Free Press understands that ‘high rents’ are the main reason for the closure.
Signs have been erected on the building stating that ‘everything must go’ with reductions being made on several items.
The retailer revealed in June 2025, following its takeover by investment firm Gordon Brothers, that it planned to shut several outlets, putting 1,300 jobs at risk.
Poundland concluded its main store closure programme in the autumn of last year, shutting 57 stores, while placing 11 closures on hold.
At the beginning of the restructuring programme, there were around 800 Poundland stores located across the UK.
This number is expected to decrease to around 650 or 700 as leases expire or landlords exercise any option to serve notice.
Many shops ceased trading by the end of 2025, with more closures expected to take place this year – one of which will be the Aylesbury branch.
Poundland’s UK country manager, Darren MacDonald, said: "We know how disappointing it is when we leave a store, but before we close our doors for a final time, we’re determined to say goodbye by offering even more amazing value to customers.
"The special reductions, on top of the value we provide in every store, will help us leave locations we’re leaving with pride.
"And when we close our doors, we look forward to welcoming customers to one of the hundreds of Poundland stores we’ll continue to operate right across the UK."
The Cambridge Street branch, which sits in the retail park, arrived earlier this decade following the closure and relocation of Argos.
The latter had been in the area for several years before it was transferred within a Sainsbury’s branch along Gatehouse Road in 2021.
On Google, the Poundland store has gained a score of 3/5 from 21 reviews, some of which are positive.
One reads: “Has a good selection of stuff, including a few clothes at the back.
“Still a few items for a pound.”
The High Street branch, which opened its doors to the Aylesbury public in December 2010, is set to remain open.
