A dog was rescued and given oxygen by firefighters after a major blaze broke out at a block of flats near Chesham and Amersham.

Eight crews from Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service rushed to Bedford Close, in Chenies, Hertfordshire, just before 4am on Sunday, July 19.

According to Bucks Fire & Rescue, the blaze is believed to have started in an external outbuilding, spread to a two-storey block containing four flats.

Firefighters from Amersham, Beaconsfield, Gerrards Cross, High Wycombe and Winslow attended, supported by crews from Rickmansworth and Garston in Hertfordshire, alongside a command support unit and five officers.

As crews worked to tackle the fire, they successfully rescued a dog from the affected building.

The animal was treated at the scene and given oxygen by firefighters.

Crews used breathing apparatus, hose reel jets, main jets and a 10.5-metre ladder to bring the blaze under control before carrying out extensive damping down operations.

Thermal imaging cameras were also used to detect and extinguish remaining hotspots.

The fire caused severe damage to two flats, while a further two properties were affected by smoke.

One firefighter was assessed at the scene as a precaution, although no serious injuries were reported.

Fire crews remained in Bedford Close for several hours, with relief crews brought in and further inspections carried out to make sure the building was safe and there was no risk of the fire reigniting.

Thames Valley Police and South Central Ambulance Service also attended.
