TWO pensioners and a middle-aged woman were targeted by thieves who stole their purses in a busy supermarket.

The three offences happened over two days while the victims were shopping in Tesco, London Road, Amersham.

Police believe the same man and woman could be responsible for the crimes.

A 79-year-old woman lost her pension money, credit cards, glasses, £20 in cash and other important papers when the thieves snatched her purse on May 23.

The two offenders made off with lottery tickets and cash when they closed in on another pensioner, believed to be in her 80s.

Another victim, Mary Petty, had her purse stolen from her bag the next day as she shopped with it over her shoulder.

The 50-year-old said: "It shook me up and it was quite upsetting really.

"I can understand what those elderly women must have gone through. These people must be caught."

Sergeant Julian Heard warned people to be vigilant and said: "We know it has happened in Chesham and other supermarkets, not only in Tesco."

The male thief is described as white, aged about 40, 5ft 8ins tall, of a stocky build and stubbly complexion. His female accomplice is about 20 years old, 5ft 6ins tall, with long fair hair.

They both have an unkempt and scruffy appearance and used a white Ford Sierra to make their escape.

Witnesses should call PC Bridget Colston at Amersham Police on 01494 465888
