Having just got over the teachers strike the country now has another strike to contend with this time at an oil refinery in Scotland. My car needed filling with petrol but I didn’t have time on the way home on Friday but after hearing the late night news on the radio I decided to go out and get some petrol.

Of course I would not consider my late night trip panic buying. No definitely not. The petrol was needed anyway. On arrival at the petrol station the first thing I saw was a customer with an array of small jerry cans lined up on the forecourt filling each one up in turn. Oh dear, looks like someone really was doing a bit of panic buying.

With my petrol safely in my car I went for a night time drive around Wycombe town centre. What amazed me was how quiet the town was. Apart from a handful of drunken youngsters roaming around Frogmoor the town centre was dead. The pub in Frogmoor looked fairly busy but there were no older people to be seen at all. There was also very little traffic on the road to contend with.

Even the complex looked quiet as I drove around the Oxford Road roundabout. Where was all the nightlife that was supposed to be brought to the town by the new cinema, bowling alley and town centre bars? There wasn’t a single person walking in the direction of the complex in search of late night entertainment.

I drove home past the houses where the town’s population were settling down for the night no doubt the noise of my car woke a few people up but at least I have enough petrol to last me several weeks. As for nightlife in Wycombe, well, there’s more activity in a graveyard.

Have you seen anyone panic buying petrol? Do you think the nightlife in Wycombe is worth staying up for?
