THE smells and colours of a French market return to Marlow this weekend. Postponed from the spring because of the foot and mouth epidemic and the bad weather, the market has proved a popular attraction in the past. It will be open today through Sunday.

WYCOMBE Leisure is doing its best to make sure youngsters are not at a loss for something to do over the summer school holidays.

At Court Garden Leisure Complex, tennis and trampolining courses, swimming lessons and the Messy Monsters Craft Clubs cater for various age groups. Sports crazy children, aged seven to 12, can get into the Energise 2001 action as early as July 30 at Sir William Borlase's School.

LAST months' cake sale at All Saints Church raised £484 for Christian Aid.

THE Reverend Roly Bain, a Christian clown who has twice been the International Clown of the Year in 1994 and 1999, makes a welcome appearance in Marlow this weekend.

Tomorrow he is staging his live show at Marlow C of E Infant School at 3pm and on Sunday he will be preaching at the Valley Church 10.30am service at Burford School in Marlow Bottom.

CLIFF Simpson again puts on his popular tea dance at Liston Hall on Thursday. It is at 2.30pm and the £1 entrance also brings tea and biscuits. Cliff has asked me to point out that his August event will go ahead one week later than usual, on August 16, as Liston Hall is enjoying a lick of paint.

AROUND 30 real ales will be on offer to complement the three jazz bands who are taking part in the Jazz and Ale Festival at the Crown and Anchor pub in the Oxford Road this weekend. The organisers say that some of the ales to be tasted have never been seen in Marlow before.

THE Dean of Kimberley will be in Marlow on Sunday to participate in a special service at 9.30am to commemorate the close links between All Saints Church and the South African diocese of Kimberley and Kuruman. Following the Causeway church service there will be an opportunity to meet the South African guests at a braai, a South African barbecue.

SUMMER Serenade, an evening of entertainment by the river to suit all tastes, takes place on Saturday evening at All Saints, Bisham. Among those adding their talents to the occasion are organist William Falconer and tenor Gareth Jones, while Pam Harman provides the odes. The music begins at 7.30pm and tickets cost £7.50. TICKETS are on sale at the parish office for the one-off appearance of the internationally acclaimed London Welsh Male Voice Choir on Saturday, July 21. The charity concert is being staged at the parish church on the Causeway to raise funds for the visit of the choir from St James, Galeshewe, South Africa, All Saints twinned church, who will be in Marlow next July. Tickets are £10.

DELAYS to the refurbishment of Bisham School have forced the postponement of the visit of Bishop of Buckingham. It is now hoped he will preach in Bisham in the autumn.

BISHAM Gardens Open Day was a triumph for the gardeners and organisers. It raised £2,540.

NINE members of the Marlow Evening Townswomen's Guild took part in a National Townswomen's Guild concert at the Royal Albert Hall where members assembled from all over the country for an evening of music and dance depicting the decades of the last millennium.

"It was a very exciting experience for those of us involved," says Marlow Guild member, Valerie Reid. "It was probably our one and only chance of appearing at such a prestigious venue."

Next event for the ladies is their summer concert, which they are putting on at the United Reformed Church in Quoiting Square to help the church Cornerstone project. It is on Wednesday, July 18, at 7.30pm and the £5 admission includes refreshments. For reservations call 01628 482646.

JUDGING takes place at the end of the month for the town council's Marlow In Bloom contest. Entries have to be at the town council offices by July 20, so don't hang about if you are proud of your shop/business front, window boxes, hanging baskets or, indeed, your own front garden.

THE War Memorial flag pole on the Causeway has been renovated after vandals cut the guy ropes just before the recent unveiling of the plaque to the town's National Servicemen.

MAKING his second appearance in the series of Music For A Sunday Afternoon at All Saints Church this weekend is pianist Julian Cable. He was a member of The Divertimenti who performed in the church last month, but this Sunday he returns to give a solo recital. Admission is free to the 4pm concert and afternoon tea is available.

OVER £800 was raised by the Spittal Street Methodist Church during Christian Aid Week. A retiring collection which replaced the cancelled sponsored walk, added another £142.

WYCOMBE'S new MP, Paul Goodman, is holding an advice clinic for constituents at Liston Hall next Saturday. He will be available to answer questions and dispense advice between 10am and 11.30am.

LATEST fundraiser by the Friends of Great Marlow School is a family quiz evening. It is going ahead at the Bobmore Lane school from 7.30pm next Friday and tickets are £6, with students and children getting a £2 reduction. To book a place call 01628 483752/440380.

CLOSURE of Use Your Loaf, the baker and sandwich shop in the High Street, has allowed Harrington's, the hair salon, to extend. Work is going ahead now but the main refurbishment will take place between August 6 and 13.

STALL holders will be out in force tomorrow at Liston Hall. The first Saturday of the month sees the monthly flea and collectors market from 9am.

MR Mason pops over from Holmer Green to let members of the Marlow & District Horticultural Society into the secrets of Making A Garden. He will give his talk on Tuesday at 8pm at Liston Hall.
