SWIMMING fully-clothed in freezing waters was one of the more unusual tasks Matt Williams faced in winning an award.

And the 19-year-old of Nairdwood Lane, Prestwood, is to go Buckingham Palace for the Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award Presentation and garden party on July 17.

He explained that there were certainly some memorable moments on the way to getting the award.

He said: "We went white water canoeing accidentally in Scotland - we didn't notice the rapids until it was too late and we spent several hours fishing 18 canoes out from between rocks and retrieving equipment that was now 400 metres downstream. We also had to do some capsize drills in the River Thames in Henley during mid January and plenty of on-lookers were wondering why we were swimming around fully clothed in freezing waters."

He achieved the award through his school, Aylesbury Grammar, and helped train young participants in the scheme.
