A CHARITY run centre for the elderly is close to securing the final part of the sum owed for a major revamp.

Elizabeth House, situated in the heart of the Cookham community, recently completed an extension project, five years in the planning, costing £180,000. The Cookham Society has donated a cheque for £2000 to the organisation, which has taken it above the £170,000 mark.

The charity run centre provides meals for between 25 and 40 elderly residents a day and provides a common meeting place in the village for elderly residents to gather and socialise.

The improvements, paid for by donations from villagers and several charitable trusts included a larger, modern dining room and refurbished sitting room area with new chairs, fittings, lights and flooring. New shower and toilet facilities to cater for the disabled were also installed.

Cookham's centre for older people gave a 'thank you' party for all fund-raisers last weekend, attended by around 100, who had the chance to look around the new facilities - and also see what work remains to be done.

Mike Copland said: "We now plan to do some work on the first floor to bring it up to modern standards. It will be mainly redecorating and carpeting and is due to be completed before the summer.

“We do have reserves that can contribute to this additional work but we are always open to contributions if people would still like to get involved".
