A GARAGE in Wycombe is helping to tackle number plate theft by fitting free security screws to cars with every service and MOT check.

It has teamed up with Wycombe Community Safety Partnership to bring the new initiative into force.

Downley Garage, in Littleworth Road, Downley, is the first in the area to fit security screws, donated by Screw Fix. The tamper-proof screws secure the plates by making sure they break if thieves attempt to steal them.

The garage is working with the Wycombe neighbourhood policing team and Wycombe District Council’s Community Safety team.

Insp Russ Murden, from the Wycombe neighbourhood team, said: “We have seen a slight increase in number plate thefts in recent months so the team has been working closely with local garages to strike up this partnership, which will benefit local vehicle owners and reduce crime.

“Licence plates are often stolen and then used in further criminal activity, such as parking offences or thefts of fuel from garages, which can be really problematic and inconvenient for the legitimate owner. The screws will prevent plates from being stolen and will hopefully act as a deterrent too. We are really pleased to be working with Downley Garage Ltd and hope that others will be keen to get involved and help to reduce vehicle crime in the town.”

Councillor Tony Green, Wycombe District Council’s Cabinet Member for Younger and Older people, said: “We know that these tamper proof screws are vital in preventing the vehicle’s details from being used to perpetrate crimes, however, people can be put off using them due to the inconvenience of fitting them themselves. It is fantastic news that this local garage has agreed to help residents take advantage of this initiative and I hope other local garages will follow suit. ”
