Over a month ago the municipal Christmas lights in Wycombe High Street were officially switched on.

Despite taking many lunchtime walks around the town centre I have yet to seem them in action.

Recently the weather has been awful with grey, overcast skies cloaking the daytime hours in a veil of semi-darkness. You would expect the festive lights in the High Street to be switched on during such dark weather to brighten the town centre and make the shoppers feel happy but, alas, this does not appear to be the case.

In the complex it’s a different story. Their festive lights are always on even in the daytime and they look most wonderful helping to cheer the shoppers and create a festive atmosphere. The magnificent Christmas tree by the Library looks most spectacular.

If the festive lights in the complex are on in the daytime why aren’t the municipal lights in the High Street? Surely there is enough money in the kitty to pay for the electricity to turn them on?

Being an inquisitive person I decided to find out when the municipal lights are actually on. It turns out they are switched on late in the afternoon when most people have gone home.

Sadly the daytime shoppers of Wycombe will never see the municipal festive lights in action. The only people to witness them switched on are the yobbos, hoodlums, intoxicated revellers and other undesirables who frequent the town centre after dark.

The festive lights could be used to attract daytime shoppers to the town centre to help the struggling businesses of the town. What a lost opportunity!

I have added a picture of the municipal lights in action just in case you do not know what they look like switched on.

What’s the point of having the lights at all if they are only illuminated when everybody has gone home?

I wonder if the other towns in the district only turn their lights on after dark? Perhaps someone could enlighten me....
