Individuals from the police service and fire brigade, RAF technicians, BT engineers and even a solicitor are just some of the many professionals to enrol for Amersham & Wycombe College’s engineering and construction courses. While the UK recession bites and thousands of employees worry about job security, it’s clear that many are rethinking their long-term prospects and retraining for the future.

“Electrical, plumbing and general construction trades are favourites,” says lecturer Eric Took. “We even have one lady who was a former member of the anti-terrorist squad who is now training to become an electrician.”

RAF technician Dave says, “I’m already involved in property development so training as an electrician is the perfect way for me to increase my knowledge and understanding of all things electrical.” Likewise, policeman Clive adds, “I’ve been in the force now for as long as I can remember, but I’ve always enjoyed DIY. The electrical engineering course I’m currently studying at Amersham & Wycombe College will eventually help me start a new career when I leave.”

“Our longer electrical courses are heavily subscribed,” says Mark Bonham, Head of Faculty, Engineering and Construction at the College, “but we have some capacity on our short courses for qualified electricians who wish to enrol for our !7th edition regulations training, inspecting and testing, and certificate for domestic electrical installers (Part P) courses.” Amersham & Wycombe College operates its Engineering and Construction courses at its Chesham and High Wycombe campuses and offers taster sessions for most courses to enable individuals to learn more before making that all-important decision to enrol.
