Musical Theatre students from Amersham & Wycombe College will be bringing a classic 1950s comedy to the Elgiva Theatre in Chesham this month – with a twist.

The Pajama Game (first presented at the St. James Theatre, New York, 1954) is a vibrant, sassy tale about management versus workers and love versus duty. It is the final production for students completing their BA(Hons) in Musical Theatre, and director David Zaman has given this interpretation a Marxist slant.

David comments: “Musicals are traditionally perceived as belonging to a certain time and place, but the universal, enduring quality of a musical can and should be transferable to the time and place in which it is produced and performed. The underlying theme of a worker’s rights validates a Marxist context – albeit Marxist-lite – and even filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard appreciated the stage show and film (1957), calling The Pajama Game the first ‘left wing musical’. If a Marxist-lite context was good enough for him… well, maybe it’s good enough for us.”

The Pajama Game will be performed at the Elgiva Theatre on Thu 21 May at 7.30pm, with further performances on Sat 23 and Sun 24 May (2.30pm and 7.30pm each day). Tickets are £10 (concessions £8) from the Elgiva on 01494 582900 or www.elgiva.com.
