WOODROW High House looks set to have a busy few weeks with lots going on. If the 60s was your era then be prepared for a treat on Sunday, February 9. Do songs such as Walk Tall, Elusive Butterfly and What would I be, remind you of anyone? Yes, for one night only Val Doonican will be in concert here in Amersham. Tickets are £12 and the entertainment begins at 7.30pm. I am sure this will be a night which brings back many happy memories so book your tickets now by calling the centre secretary on 01494 433531.

THE Amersham Society is hosting a talk by Audrey Hogarth on the work of a local magistrate. If you have ever wanted to know what goes on behind the scenes at a court or just learn more about the work of a magistrate then this talk is defiantly a must. The talk will be held in the Market Hall in Old Amersham on Wednesday. Non-members of the society are welcome to attend and the cost is just £1.

CARRINGTON'S in Old Amersham will be introducing a Supper Club from February. Twice a month you are invited to enjoy a set meal in the evening for which a copy of the menu will be made available at least two weeks prior to the special evening. The menu will change each month and will not include anything normally available on the daily menu.

So if you fancy trying something a little different in the company of like-minded people then why not give the supper club a try? For more information call Carrington's in Old Amersham on 01494 432045.

I MENTIONED earlier in the column that Woodrow High House has a busy few weeks of events ahead so if you have your diaries handy then here are a couple of other events happening in February. A talk by Geoff Bennett on Four Seasons will take place on Sunday, February 23. Tickets cost £8 and the talk begins at 6.30pm.

The horse racing season will soon be upon us with all the major annual events due to take place over the next few months. As a taster for this there will be a Cheltenham Racing Preview evening on Wednesday, February 26. This is sure to be of interest to all who either work with and ride horses or are simply a spectator.

Further information on the events at Woodrow High House and the work at the centre can be obtained from the centre secretary on 01494 433531.

ARE you still trying to keep that New Year's Resolution to get fitter. I know I am and it seems a greater challenge every year. The Fitness League runs exercise classes regularly on a Thursday morning at the Community Centre in Chiltern Avenue. There are two sessions each lasting one hour and they begin at either 9.45am or 11am. If you have time available during the day and think this could be for you then call 01494 443717 for more information.

Like an increasing number of organisations you can also find out information via the Internet. The web address is www.thefitnessleague.com.

WITH some icy weather highly likely over the coming weeks, driving on local roads is often more dangerous and not all are salted. The county council has produced a leaflet called 'Safer Winter Driving' which is available from Chiltern District Council offices in Chiltern Avenue. This shows which roads are salted and includes a small insert map for the Amersham & Chesham area. Generally all major and most secondary routes are salted but many residential streets are not and extra care must be taken especially at night and when the temperature drops.

WHILE most of the Spring Term Adult Education classes have now started there are still a few short courses and day school places available. The Amersham Branch of the Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes WEA is running a Day School looking at 20th Century Art in March and has two short courses in April dealing with Eastern Philosophy and Theatre Appreciation.

If you would like to find out more and perhaps gain a new interest then contact Myra Ottley on 01494 782179.

VOLUNTEERS are needed. A reminder that volunteers are always needed to help out on local projects. While this is unpaid work it can be very rewarding and gives you the opportunities to learn new skills. Volunteering is not just for the young or retired and volunteers can be any age and from all walks of life. Most volunteers work regularly but there are plenty of opportunities if you only have a few hours a month to spare and are only available in the evenings or at the weekend.

The Chiltern Volunteer Bureau is a good place to start and they can be contacted Monday to Thursday between 9.30am and pm on 01494 793470.
