THE photograph in your Memories section last week of the locomotive King George V was taken at Wycombe Station and the date is around October 7, 1971.
The loco was on its first trip to London since its withdrawal in 1962. The train left Birmingham Moor Street I believe on a Monday, for exhibition at Kensington where it stayed on show until Thursday.
Then on to Swindon for a couple of days (where it is now in the new museum).
On the Saturday it left Swindon for its home base at Bulmers Hereford, via the Severn Tunnel.
The King Class locos never went to Marylebone or Oxford in GWR or BR days as they were classified as double red axle loading.
I noted the two circles under the cab side number plate.
The two medallions were presented to the engine which are above the number plate when the loco went to the USA to celebrate 100 years of The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company 1827-1927 plus the famous bell it carries on the front buffer beam.
I am an ex-steam footplateman.
