FIREFIGHTERS rescued a couple and their dog from a High Wycombe house following a fire at the property in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Three fire crews from High Wycombe station raced to the scene after reports that people were trapped in a downstairs bedroom of the property in Tyzack Road. The fire started around 2.40am on Saturday.

Firefighters used breathing apparatus when they entered the house and pulled the couple and their dog out. They then tackled the blaze for almost an hour.

A spokesman for High Wycombe fire station, said: "A ground-floor room was on fire and two people were trapped in a downstairs bedroom.

"We managed to get the dog out through a window and got a man and a woman out through the front door. Unfortunately their cat used up its nine lives."

The couple were taken to Wycombe Hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation.
