THE novels of Jane Austen are familiar to millions, but it is less remembered that she was also a keen amateur musician.

It is this side of the author's life that the music quartet Concert Royal explore when they bring Jane Austen's Musical England to Norden Farm Centre for the Arts, Maidenhead, tonight at 7.30pm.

The author of Pride and Prejudice and Emma had an extensive collection of printed and handwritten music, much of which has been carefully preserved at Chawton by the Jane Austen Memorial Trust.

Jane Austen's Musical England draws from this collection to create an evening of music from the English drawing room.

Gareth Negus, spokesman for the evening, says: "Music played a significant part in Jane's life at Chawton in Hampshire. According to her niece Caroline, she practised daily before breakfast.

"This show is enhanced by extracts from Jane's novels and letters, which set the scene and place the music in context."
