THE bring and buy sale which was held at Little Chalfont Methodist Church on Saturday, February 2, sold more than 50 cakes, which were all baked by members of the congregation. As well as all those delicious cakes there were other attractions including bric-a-brac, puzzles, toys, toiletries and books. Nearly 50 people attended the sale and £120 was raised for Bell Lane County Combined School.

WOODROW High House will shortly be holding another of their popular Sunday evening functions. This time it is an 'Evening of Magic' with David Ball of the Magic Circle, plus history of the Magic Circle and Tricks to Mystify. This intriguing evening is on Sunday, March 3, at 6.30pm for 7pm. THE next meeting of Amersham Gardening Association will be a talk entitled 'Bulbs, Corms and Rhizones' by Brian Fisher, on Friday, February 22, at the Red Cross Hall in Chiltern Avenue. More about this in next week's issue. Non-members are, of course, always welcome at these monthly meetings.

ONCE again there is a need for lots of volunteers to offer their help to organisations in and around Amersham. The Volunteer Bureau is open from Monday to Wednesday from 9am1pm and at other times by appointment. The types of activities available include driving, befriending, fundraising and catering. Some organisations only need people to help for an hour or two each week. It is a good way of meeting new friends and having fun at the same time.

Help is needed by Marie Curie Cancer Care who need people to help collect on their annual Daffodil Day on Saturday, March 9, in local town centres and supermarkets. All proceeds from this will go to Marie Curie nurses.

Meals on Wheels in Amersham and Chesham still need more volunteers so they can increase their service.

Amersham Hospital would welcome volunteers to help in many areas within the hospital.

The Women's Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS) has a number of projects in the area which are in need of volunteers. The WRVS Emergency Services Team provide support in the event of a major accident and they are looking for reserve volunteers. This would be an ideal opportunity for anyone seeking work experience, a step towards employment, or references. The WRVS has a wide range of projects, including child contact centres, Darby and Joan Clubs and Books on Wheels.

The Iain Rennie Hospice at Home is a charity which offers specialist nursing care for patients with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses, in their own homes. It also helps relatives and friends with support and comfort during the illness and bereavement. This service is available 365 days a year and help is available to patients and their carers on a 24-hour basis.

Toc H is based in Wendover and is a registered charity with branches all over the country. It provides for people in the Chiltern area. Support and friendship is available for people with mental illness problems. The members spend a day every week, play cards, take part in quizzes, and go out quite often for walks and pub lunches.

IF you feel that you are able to offer a couple of hours a week to help any of the above very deserving causes, please ring the Chiltern Volunteer Bureau itself on 01494 793470 from Monday to Wednesday between 10am and 1pm.

I'M afraid there's not a lot of news this week as yours truly has been laid up with a nasty throat infection (talking too much, I'm told). However, all is now back to normal, so hopefully, I will be able to do a longer report next week, then I'll probably have writer's cramp.
