SEAN Devine scored his first goal for 22 months and then celebrated by lifting his shirt to reveal a t-shirt with the words Im back written on it.

The Former Republic of Ireland B international feared he would have to quit the game as he spent the best part of two years battling against a career-threatening knee injury.

But he scored in Wycombe's 2-1 win over Bristol City on Saturday.

He said: "I'm not sure how many people saw the message. Ive had it on the t-shirt for about five games waiting for the chance to show it off and I think most of the writing had washed out.

And he dedicated his first goal since April 21, 2000, to wife Kelly and son Sonny.

He said: Ive been like a bear with a sore head and shes borne the brunt of it. There were times when I thought I would never play again. It was tough on me but just as tough on her.

She started crying when I scored. Shes been through it as well. She and Sonny had to put up with it when I was coming home in a foul mood wondering if I was ever going to play again.

But Ive got my reward. Im back playing again and now hopefully I can push on for better things.

I feel quite emotional. Ive waited for this moment. Its been nearly two years. Ive been dreaming about this day and all the hard work was worth it when I scored.

Its been a long time and Im just hoping I start knocking a few in now.

Devine broke his duck with a twice-taken free kick as Wanderers came from behind with two goals in three minutes to sink City after Lee Peacock had put the westcountry side ahead.

Devines equaliser, followed by Mark Rogers winner three minutes later, re-ignited Wanderers season and put them back on track for the play-offs.

Boss Lawrie Sanchez said: Im delighted for him. Its been a long and tough road for him. Hes been like a bear with a sore head in training. Hes been desperate to score and you could see how much it meant to him and to the rest of the lads.

Hes worked very hard to get himself fit again and he deserves his goal. Hed gone four games without a goal. He was berating himself and everyone around him.

"Hopefully now hes got one he will take off again."
