AN urgent meeting to discuss the future of Amersham-on-the-Hill is set to be held on February 20.

The private meeting will be held between Chiltern District Council and Buckinghamshire County Council. It will be looking at alternative projects to boost trade and business in the town after the plans to build a 37,000 sq ft shopping centre fell through in January.

The members of St Michael and All Angels Church in Sycamore Road, who were the key party in the Peel Holdings bid decided they were not going to sell their freehold site to make way for the centre, as they wanted to stay central in the town.

However a £3 million redevelopment scheme was put forward by The Kings Church in Old Amersham to build a new community centre and library in Chiltern Avenue. They would also benefit from a new church out of the deal.

The project will be discussed at the meeting at the Chiltern District council offices in King George V Road, Amersham.

Cllr Don Phillips (Con, Little Chalfont) said: "This is the first meeting of the panel since St Michael and All Angels Church and Peel Holdings gave notice that they were not pursuing proposals.

"On the last meeting we said we wanted certain clarification from Kings Church about their plans and I hope we soon hear from them."
