AN ACTION group fighting McDonald's plans for a drive-thru on an old pub site can breathe a sigh of relief this week after developers announced plans to put up apartments there.

The revelation comes from developers King's Oak Homes just weeks after Loudwater's Residents Against McDonald's (RAM) won outline planning permission to build on the former White Blackbird site, on the London Road.

A spokesman for Maidenhead-based King's Oak Homes said: "We can confirm we have bought the site. It looks like we will be building apartments. We will be submitting a new application in the next month or so for a slightly revised scheme."

Julie Hanif, co-founder of RAM, lives in Birfield Road, Loudwater, just behind the site.

She said: "It would be the ultimate to have houses built there. We'd keep our village identity as they would blend in lovely.

"It will be a great victory to a great campaign."

Fellow founder Gary Brown agreed but pledged to fight on until houses go up.

Mr Brown said: "Until the houses are in position the battle goes on.

"We will be delighted to have houses go up there as that will be the end of our problems. It was important that we went out and got the permission. It showed our determination and dedication."

Noise and traffic chaos caused by a drive-thru prompted councillors to throw out plans at a development control committee meeting in August.

RAM stayed together and secured outline planning permission to make the land more attractive to developers.
