Re: 'Parish poll abuses freedoms' (Letters September 22)

YOUR correspondent Mr MA Timms, has a strange idea of freedom, and no knowledge of the 1972 Local Government Act, if he thinks that the parish poll in Iver is an abuse of freedom.

Indeed, the Act clearly provides for any matter to be raised if there is local concern.

Taxpayers are rightly concerned that they will have to foot a very hefty bill if the Government succeeds in coercing our local authorities into preparing for the Euro before we have even decided to abandon the pound. It is our money which will have been wasted if, as seems likely, we decide to refuse the EU's pleas for us to join them in this extremely risky venture.

Councils up and down the land are being sucked into quasi-official bodies which are working for the EU. Most electors are unaware that district councils have representatives on the regional assemblies and each pays their assembly £3,000pa for the privilege.

The EU has divided the UK into 12 regions (England no longer appearing on EU maps), and their regional assemblies are responsible to Brussels, by-passing our own Parliament in Westminster.

EU control is trickling down from above. County councils already have various committees dealing with EU matters, all of which are paid for by our taxes.

Slowly and inexorably we are being 'un-hooked' from Westminster and being re-connected directly to an undemocratic European Commission which has as its declared aim the abolition of that very freedom Mr Timms speaks of.

If we join this basket case of a single currency it will mean our subjugation into a 'country called Europe'.

The right to use parish polls to prevent the abuse of power was written into the Local Government Act. By availing themselves of this provision, the voters of Iver are defending, not abusing, freedom. All power to their elbow.
