BUCKINGHAMSHIRE Hospitals' Trust, which runs Wycombe and Stoke, has always said it has no intention to close A&E at Wycombe and that if it did, the matter would have to go out for consultation.

A spokesman said: "Only patients requiring major trauma surgery will either go straight to, or be transferred to, Stoke Mandeville for treatment. Ambulance paramedics are skilled in treating and stabilising patients at the scene of the accident and then taking them to the most appropriate hospital. If that is clearly Stoke then the patient will be taken directly there.

"If the patient needs treating or stabilising in A&E, they will be taken to Wycombe and then if necessary for complex surgery to Stoke."

The statement said the hospital changes would also help people waiting on lists for routine operations. They would have to wait a set period for treatment and would not find their operations put off at the last minute because staff were needed for emergencies.

An NHS spokesman said: "We believe that these changes will bring about real benefits for local communities."
