WINTER walks in Buckinghamshire are being promoted to help people burn off the extra Christmas pounds, with cash incentives for farmers who welcome ramblers.

Suggested routes include riverside, meadow, woodland and farmland walks in the area.

Under the Countryside Stewardship Scheme (CSS) there are payments for farmers and landowners who manage their land to welcome walkers and wildlife, as well as looking after historic sites. The government's Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) is funding the scheme.

Christina Dandison, a Rural Development Service adviser for DEFRA in the South East, said: "The leaflets will provide great inspiration for new places to explore and enjoy the countryside this winter. Get out and about in the fresh air and work up an appetite for Christmas over-indulgence!"

Copies of the leaflets, entitled Conservation Walks and Rides: Farming and Access, are available by calling the Access Management Unit on 01902 693218, or by visiting http://www.defra.gov.uk/RDS/SE/access.htm
