CHESHAM and Amersham MP Cheryl Gillan has been appointed as Shadow Wales Secretary in the first cabinet of new Tory leader David Cameron.

The 53-year-old, who was born in Llandaff, Cardiff, replaces Bill Wiggin in the role.

Under previous Conservative leader Michael Howard, the shadow Welsh secretary post was not part of the shadow cabinet but Mr Cameron has brought the role back.

Ms Gillan said she was delighted with her new role, adding it was significant the job has been reinstated as part of the shadow cabinet.

She said: "Having been born in Wales and with family members living there, I am delighted to be appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Wales.

"There are many challenges with the Welsh Assembly election in May 2007 and the General Election beyond that.

"Welsh Conservatives have a strong voice in Welsh politics."
